The Alexander Technique
What is the Alexander Technique?
The Alexander Technique is a unique education process that changes habitual patterns of tension which interfere with movement, posture and breathing.
Many habits, both physical and mental, accumulate over a lifetime and leave unconscious fixed patterns of chronic muscle tension. These patterns inevitably interfere with natural postural reflexes that work to keep us upright against the pull of gravity. Because of this interference, movement and poise can be affected in ways that lead to stress, poor posture, pain and injury. Unconscious muscular tensions over time will decrease vitality, drain energy and affect quality of life .
The Alexander Technique improves balance and coordination and promotes better muscle tone, strength and overall functioning. It’s all about how you think and move.
Developed by an Australian, FM Alexander, the Technique also gives practical skills that can be applied to everyday activities as well as to more specific pursuits, such as sport and artistic performance.
Alexander developed the principles of the Technique over a long period and they provide the framework for the practice of the Technique. Through the process of lessons, students learn how to apply the principles and practice to simple tasks such as walking, standing and sitting, even talking.
